Nursing Personal Statement

My love for caring for sick people started when my father’s illness meant I had to stop my work as a teacher to take care of him. I found myself in a situation where medical attention was required in the care of my father and I have always felt very frustrated at my inability to assist due to a lack of medical skills/knowledge. As a motivated individual with a strong desire to work within a dynamic and progressive environment, I feel I am capable in achieving my dream of returning to education to be a registered nurse. I am diligent and punctual as well as respectful to people from any background, with all beliefs.  I am an energetic person and enjoy helping others and being active. To further my insight and utilise this talent into nursing field I went to care job to care for old people. I found that I thoroughly enjoyed this and had a great talent for it. I embarked on an access course to establish my knowledge. This has given me more insight and also enhanced the skills, which will be valuable in the nursing industry. I studied Biology and I have gained further knowledge of human Biology, learning more about how the body works. I also gained better understanding of how human organs work and some common diseases, its prevention and its treatment. Sociology has enabled me to understand the culture of people and their divergent views and their needs. Mathematics has also enhanced my analytical thinking in my calculations and my research skills have also improved.

I also like to read journals and new publications constantly for example the RCN journal to enhance my learning and to keep informed in regards to current medical developments and the latest techniques.

In my care job, I happen to work with nurses and working with them has increased my confidence and it has helped me work as part of a team. This experience has given me the understanding of the role of a nurse. The role of a nurse is unique, rewarding and challenging. I understand the responsibility involved and the professional attitude needed as a nurse. Nursing is not only a career to me, but also an ambition because I have passion for.

I have learnt that adult nurses regardless of their work setting, they perform basic duties that include treatment given to patients, educating patients and also given public about medical conditions, and providing advice and emotional support to patients' family members.  The element of nursing which is just as important is the recording of patients' medical histories and symptoms, in addition help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operate medical machinery, administer treatment and medications, and also helped patient follow-up and rehabilitation.

Throughout my life I have always been seen as hardworking, dedicated and enthusiastic in all my doings. I was nominated as a girls prefect in my primary school and my secondary school and in my training as a teacher, I received the best teacher award for Junior High School category in my district after teaching for only two years. In my care job, client, colleagues and managers recommend me as a result of my dedication enthusiasm and passion for the job.

I fully understand that Nursing is a way of life and more than simply a career. As a carer, I can adhere to the absolute commitment that this career requires. As a previous teacher, I am a good listener with a caring nature.  I am also a good team player but know how to take charge and be a leader when necessary. I feel that my life experience will ensure that I take my studying very seriously and can bring more influences to my work. I understand that nursing demands a capability for medical disciplines, which I am capable of as proven by my educational achievements and my career history in Social care.
