Nursing Personal Statement

My ambition to become a nurse, and to specialise in paediatric nursing, is a direct result of the pleasure and satisfaction I find in working with children and in finding ways to comfort them when they are ill and to foster their healthy development.  As a mother myself I know that children respond above all to adult attention and interest and can be helped and supported by the simplest gesture of devotion and dedication, even if this is no more than playing games with them.  Children’s nursing is full of variety and interests me because of the opportunities it offers to work in different environments and on many different sorts of cases.  Babies can be born with serious conditions which demand the most urgent but delicate treatment, and children can develop disturbing and of course distressing illnesses.  Finding a solution to these is central not only to a child’s physical health but often also to his or her mental health and growth towards maturity, and the children’s nurse caries great responsibility for the welfare and comfort of his or her charges.  I am also very much aware that childhood illnesses can be traumatic for the child’s family and that a nurse must be sensitive to these feelings and attempt to offer them as much support as possible.  Being in hospital itself can be very distressing for a child and the nurse must be responsive to this and make every effort to prevent this from making the child’s experience of illness even worse.  It is an interesting and attractive aspect of the job too that children’s nurses can often work in other settings than paediatric wards, such as day-care centres, clinics and perhaps the child’s own home.  The job is challenging and emotionally testing, and clearly not everyone is suited to it, but I feel that this sort of work would bring me the greatest possible personal and professional satisfaction.

As a native of Sri Lanka I came to Britain in 2008 on my marriage and quickly found employment with Leicestershire County Council, though I have not studied in the UK.  My examination record is good. In my final school years I studied science subjects with a view to ultimately becoming a nurse.  I completed a National Certificate course in Engineering Draughtsmanship in 2005 and a diploma in General English over one year in the Open University in Sri Lanka.  Tamil is my mother tongue, but I have competent English and expect my skill to develop rapidly.  I also completed a diploma in Computer Applications before I left Sri Lanka.

At school I was a keen participant in sports and still do my best to maintain my fitness.  My life is largely occupied with raising my children, but I enjoy working in my garden and I continue to play badminton.  I am hard-working and responsible as an individual and as an employee, enjoy cooperating with others as part of a team but have the confidence to act on my own initiative as well.  My greatest virtue, I believe, and the quality which makes me most suitable as a potential nurse, is my compassionate nature, particularly where children are concerned.  I am prepared to devote myself to my planned career and believe I have the personal abilities, the academic strength and the degree of commitment to make a success of a degree course.
