Entering the education system at A-level, I am keen to achieve success in my chosen subjects and have prepared myself as fully as possible by first undertaking a year-long college course to perfect my English. Already multi-lingual, my travels in Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Germany and Spain have served to vastly improve my natural communication abilities and instil a genuine appreciation for the diversity of nations. Differing mentalities across countries is an issue that interests me greatly, as I believe it has an important effect on my chief passion, study of the world’s economy. Kazakhstan’s situation in the global scheme is not ideal and I feel that a new generation of thinkers, contributing fresh ideas and implementing radical policies, could change this for the better. For instance, I suggest that the government needs to improve its infrastructure for distributing oil revenues and other fiscal assets. Its current capacity for project design and (crucially) efficient evaluation and analysis, is limited. In order to target social aid strategically for the development of vital sectors, the expertise of the International Financial Institutions should be drawn upon. Moreover, I see it as essential to promote the country as desirable to foreign investors. Helping nations such as Kazakhstan to grow successfully is within the power of economists and I am inspired by the dynamic scope and scale of careers that can be built in this field.

Exercising my proactive and positive nature, last summer I arranged a work placement with an LLP specialising in Agro-technology transfer and commercialisation. Here I enjoyed a post assisting the manager and was granted many important insights into the structure and operations of the company. As a member of staff, I was invited to attend a business seminar presented by two visiting lecturers from a prestigious Jerusalem university. Their subject matter was fascinating to me, exploring in detail how the agricultural sector in their country had been developed and refined. Eager to continue this learning journey, I now subscribe to ‘The Economist’ and regularly read the relevant sections of national broadsheets, keeping up to date with all the latest events and advancements. I also recently joined The Oxford Union, where I expect to see many interesting speakers and participate in debates.

With my mature attitude, I have a greater realisation than most that it is difficult to pursue serious goals unless you commit yourself to considerable hard work. As a determined sportsman, for instance, I train at the swimming pool three times a week and run every day. The rewards I have reaped have been well worth my efforts: on top of personal discipline, independence and initiative, I have honed excellent groupwork skills and the ability to understand and motivate members of my team. Having played football for my high school in many city-wide tournaments, I have a competitive edge that drives me forward in all my aims. I am also a conscientious individual, who has volunteered with the community in many capacities including litter-picking and tree-planting. With great attention to detail and a flair for organisation, I have assisted school librarians in both daily tasks and larger, more demanding events calling for creativity. My plans for the future are ambitious and centre on graduating from your unique course, followed by progression to a masters degree. I thrive on exerting my intellectual capacities and potential to learn; therefore, I am excitedly anticipating continuing my education as an economist and embarking on such an involving, challenging career. I long ago promised myself that I would accomplish expertise and success in the economic arena and, as an unusually dedicated and trustworthy young man, I pride myself on always keeping promises.
