Quantity Surveying Personal Statement

Since commencing further education my aspiration has been to gain employment in the construction industry. I am particularly interested in the role of a Quantity Surveyor as it is a vital role within the industry that combines my methodical approach to problem solving with my interests in the field. I would relish the opportunity to study the skills and knowledge necessary to hold this position of responsibility in the future. I am currently studying The Extended Diploma in Business Level 3 Course at college and am due to complete this by June 2012. Within the first year I have achieved four distinctions, four merits and am still to complete five units. I feel I am working hard both by myself and with my tutors and consider myself to be committed to the course, therefore giving me the opportunity to achieve my full potential. As well drive, determination and transferable study skills, I am also honing my abilities in mathematical and logical problem solving, planning and project management and business logistics, all of which are essential elements of Quantity Surveying.

I have attended several university open days and have decided to study the BSc Honours degree in Quantity Surveying, due to the varied nature of the role and the way it interacts with my existing interests and strengths. Because of this visiting process I have had the opportunity to speak to many lecturers. We have discussed the pros and cons of the degree, and the industry, but I still feel this would be the right choice for me. I have also recently had an interview with a large construction company to consider whether a placement within my degree course would be advantageous, allowing me to gain hands on experience of the industry while I study. Combining this with the degree course would hopefully give me the opportunity to enter multiple management career paths in the field after graduation.

I am currently employed by Sainsbury’s and have just completed my first year with the company. I work part-time and am a fully trained Customer Service Assistant. I also help support my colleagues in various areas within the store and I feel this has further helped me develop my confidence and communication skills within the job role.

I feel I am a dedicated, focused and committed person, not only in my studies but also in my other interests. I am passionate about golf and have recently been approached to be junior captain at my local Golf Club next year. I feel the passion and dedication I give to the game reflects my abilities as a reliable, hardworking and trustworthy person and I will fully embrace the role of leadership next season, hopefully leading the team to success.

I have worked hard to gain an academic grounding in the project management and business administration aspects of the construction industry and have demonstrated my enthusiasm to put this knowledge into practice in the practical arena. I am greatly excited by the prospect of supplementing this with the technical skills and expertise needed to become a highly professional and knowledgeable addition to industry upon graduation.
