Property Developement Personal Statement
My inspiration to pursue a career as a quantity surveyor was sparked by observing my uncle, a successful property developer. From a young age he allowed me to accompany him onto construction sites, where he educated me about the importance of accurate costs calculations and working to deadlines and budgets. I now hope to follow in his footsteps by applying the skills and knowledge I will acquire through a Property Development degree, in the hope of one day running my own surveying company.
Property valuation is the area which fascinated me most. Through my AS-level Maths and Accountancy I have developed strong numeric skills, which I enjoy applying to practical situations. My ability to formulate complex calculations and knowledge of business accounts will be invaluable in my future career in Property Development when I am required to evaluate building costs, including materials, transport and personnel.
I deepened my practical experience of real estate through my summer job at ‘Centaline Property’ company in Hong Kong in 2008. There, I was responsible for inputting customer data on the computer system and also frequently accompanied colleagues on site visits and sales pitches. Through this developed a variety of negotiation and sales techniques, as well as office work methods which have assisted my study skills.
Through this experience I also learnt that excellent communication skills are fundamental to success in the field of Property Development. I have improved my interpersonal skills by participating in charity fund raising and taking care of elderly patients at a local nursing home. This requires a great deal of patience and good listening skills. My language skills (I speak native Cantonese and fluent English) enable me to interact with a wide range of people and will give me the opportunity to take advantage of the truly global career prospects related to property.
In my spare time I enjoy swimming to keep fit and play piano, frequently taking part in competitions. This has taught me the value of commitment, as it required many hours of practice. I am a highly self-motivated student, who views failure as a trigger to improve myself. In addition, my sociable nature means that I love working in a team. I look forward to both the independent and group-orientated study methods at university.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, I look forward to hearing from you.
