  MSc Marketing Personal Statement

Witnessing what an interactive, creative and people orientated area Marketing is during my recent placement as a Marketing and PR intern has inspired me to learn more about this fascinating field by pursuing a Masters. I believe that the skills and knowledge I will acquire under the guidance of world-renowned tutors will equip me to achieve my ambition of becoming a leading Marketing Consultant.

What most appeals to me about a Marketing Masters is the way theory and practice are so closely interlinked. I chose my current course, a four-year sandwich course with two six-month industrial placements, because I believe a one can only truly understand business through experience. During my first placement as a Business Development Agent at Astute Ltd I applied the theoretical knowledge from my People and Organisations module to build relationships with clients and colleagues, developing strong verbal communication and persuasive techniques. From a marketing perspective I was responsible for conducting customer satisfaction surveys in order to compile market intelligence, and using this information to improve the quality of service and to promote upcoming events. As a result of my dedication to my work I was awarded Top Lead Developer of the Month. A summer internship as a Business Support Technician at PYV Ltd in 2009 further improved my teamwork and numeracy skills and my ability to adapt to new situations.

I deepened my understanding of Marketing during my second placement in 2010, at e-Dialog, an provider of e-commerce, multichannel retailing and interactive marketing for global organisations. As an intern I assisted the Marketing Manager and Analysts with the organisation of client events and conferences, the production of reports and updates for the accounts team and primary and secondary research projects. This taught me how prioritise work in order to cope well working under pressure. I also closely liaised with a team of consultants working to improve e-Dialog’s company image and strategy. The diversity of their work and their personal approach to each client inspired me to learn more about consultancy. I therefore read press releases, journals and magazines whilst on placement and selected a Management Consultancy module for my final year. I particularly enjoy the role plays involving presentations to leading consulting firms and think the idea of working for a client from start to finish, seeing the result of my advice and guidance, would be very exciting. I look forward to learning more about this field at Masters level so that I can pursue a rewarding, client-facing career in consultancy.

Having spent time living in Russia and the UK, the international aspects of Marketing particularly appeal to me. My language skills (I speak native Russian, fluent English and basic French and Spanish) will enable me to take advantage of global careers opportunities. As the Vice-President of a Russian Society at Bath University for three years I have been responsible for organising events to promote Russian culture and provide international networking opportunities. I have held numerous other positions of responsibility, indicating that I am a reliable leader and team player. I was a school prefect and liaised with staff to organise balls, meetings and social events. In my spare time I am a keen sportswoman, and have represented my school and university in table tennis, squash, lawn tennis, volleyball and swimming.

I am a highly self-motivated individual who enjoys challenges, be they in the classroom, the workplace or on the sports pitch. The sense of achievement when succeeding inspires me to work harder. I perceive Marketing as a career with many opportunities for professional development and personal improvement, which attracts me to it. A Masters in this area will be an invaluable investment for the future because of the school’s strong reputation, emphasis on applied learning and outstanding links with the consulting industry.

Hopefully this personal statement has provided you with some ideas and guidance.
