Medicine Personal Statement
Demonstrating a genuine love for the sciences from my school years, I have long known that the vibrant and dynamic field of medicine is where my future lies. The unique vocation of doctor, with its varied demands and satisfactions, appeals to me in its promise of a lifetime of challenge and learning. As an individual, I have adopted a principle of active participation supported by independent study, whilst the environment of the institute has presented me with a model of a highly integrated interdisciplinary environment where research, teaching, clinical training and care interact. My interest in neuroscience (especially in relation to movement disorders) has flourished and I have been absorbed by fascinating seminars on Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. My focus remains however upon my undergraduate honours project, which sees me working with a variety of prestigious neuroscience groups as I detail my efforts to characterise the pathogenic mechanism of the missense mutation in Dok7 protein. A self-motivated worker, I have relished this chance to employ my own initiative. However, I also welcomed the valuable opportunities presented by assisting at the congenital myasthenic syndrome clinic, where I observed examinations (revealing much about the complex patient-physician relationship) and shadowed a doctor’s ‘typical’ daily routine. With an analytical mind and flair for critical thinking, I am able to handle pressure and conflicting demands in a calm manner. Meticulous, I excel at record-keeping and writing tasks and possess a refined sense of the ethics of confidentiality. My repertoire contains many complimentary skills gleaned from a support worker job in a Mencap care home; assisting individuals from across the spectrum of learning disability, enabling them in everyday life, was very rewarding. It also improved my interpersonal and communication skills greatly. With an exceptional amount of relevant employment experience, I have innumerable insights gained firsthand from roles including medical laboratory scientist and laboratory assistant. However, as a proactive and conscientious individual, eager to develop a clear understanding of life as a medical doctor, I have also undertaken a variety of hospital visits across departments including A&E, ICU and Radiology. Seeking out areas that are often overlooked (reception, the cleaning department) I possess a true overview of life within a busy working hospital and an appreciation of how diverse aspects combine to form a coherent whole.
Testifying to my excellent time-management, I balance academia with many outside interests. In the process of qualifying as a personal trainer, I can often be found at the gym, playing football with friends and walking. Combining my love of sport with charity work, I organise various active events for my church’s homeless ministry. Having taken part in Bupa’s famous runs in the past, I am determined to compete this year despite setbacks. My motivation comes from a desire to fundraise for ‘Street Game’, an organisation setting up sports projects in deprived communities, bringing people together and unearthing their potential. With my confident and positive personality, I have enjoyed exploring my creative side through joining a drama club. I have also felt compelled to take on responsibilities in wider university life; last year’s organising secretary for the Afro-Caribbean Society, I have now been elected into the position of president. In addition, I act as ambassador for my school. These roles testify to my reliable yet versatile nature, my commitment, plus my ability to energise a group. Having mastered many skills in my life, including becoming bi-lingual, I am determined to go on to fulfil my true potential and justify others’ confidence in me. The recipient of a ‘future leaders’ award from Brookes University, I am dedicated to continuing on my path to success and fulfilment in a career that I am passionate about.
